ADAM. 1st short-story in series I’m going to call “Encounters with Greatness”;
In college I pursued my first passion: the music scene in San Francisco. I got the job booking bands at The Bear’s Lair at UC Berkeley even though I went to SFSU. So local bands would send me their demo tapes. I got one – a two song EP – that I really loved from a band called Mod-L Society. So I booked them into the club and went to see them perform. Their front man Adam was absolutely amazing. He seemed to be singing from his soul.
The band broke up. Adam tried a few other bands before he disappeared from the music scene. I was sorry that he did. I thought he was the best singer in town, Chris Isaak included.
And then one day, about a year later, I’m walking across the UC Davis campus and I see Adam! He was easy to identify bc he often wore a leather fringe jacket. He told me he quit music and had traveled around Europe. He was unsure if he’d ever return to playing. He was discouraged. I told him how great I thought he was and encouraged him to play again, as I’m sure everyone did.
Perhaps a year later, a band I was managing played at the I-Beam on a Thursday night. I asked them how it went. They said “Fine but we got upstaged by a new band with a singer that seemed to be singing from his soul. He blew everyone away.” I exclaimed, “It’s got to be Adam!”
Turns out it was. Adam had formed a new band, Counting Crows.
I always think of Adam Durtiz bc he almost gave up right before the break though. You never know how close you are to your break through.
